This 2-Day Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga Tour offers an authentic experience in Morocco’s vast Erg Chegaga dunes—the longest and most remote part of the Sahara Desert. To begin with, the journey takes you through the Anti-Atlas Mountains to Agdez, where you’ll visit Kasbah Tamnougalte, the valley’s largest kasbah. Afterward, you’ll follow an ancient caravan route to Tamegroute, a town famous for its green glaze pottery and the renowned Quranic Library.
Once in the desert, you’ll enjoy a sunset camel ride. Meanwhile, your night will be spent in a luxury camp.
Along the way, you’ll pass ancient kasbahs, lush green oases, and traditional Berber villages, where you’ll gain insight into life in southern Morocco. On the return journey, make a stop in Tazenakht, a town renowned for its Berber rug-making—an ancient craft carefully passed down through generations.
On day one of your 2-Day Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga Desert Tour, your driver picks you up at 8:30 AM, heading to Agdez, where the Dra’a Valley begins. After visiting Kasbah Tamnougalte, the road follows an ancient caravan route, passing villages and gardens that showcase traditional oasis life.
By midday, you reach Zagora for lunch, then continue to Tamegroute to explore its famous green-glazed pottery and ancient Quranic library. In the afternoon, you drive south to M’hamid, the last paved stop before crossing 60 km of desert.
Deep in the remote Erg Chegaga dunes, you’ll experience the silence and vastness of the desert. A guided camel ride takes you to the dunes’ peak for a breathtaking sunset.
Your night is spent in a luxury camp with dinner, nomad music by the fire, and a private tent—pure comfort in the heart of the desert.
If you get up early enough, you can watch the amazing sunrise, as the colors of the dunes and the dancing shadows create spectacular views. Afterward, enjoy breakfast before setting off on a 90 km journey across the Sahara Desert, heading in the opposite direction from where we previously traveled.
Along the way, this route showcases the desert’s diverse landscapes, including the ‘erg’ rolling dunes, the ‘reg’ rocky desert, the ‘hammada’ flat terrain, and the lush oases, before reaching the desolate expanse of the now dried-up Lake Iriqi. Mirages are a frequent occurrence here, and no, the “water” really is only an illusion. At the lake’s edge, you can search for fossils; some are scattered loosely about, while others are fixed firmly into the rocks.
As we leave the desert behind, we arrive at the quaint village of Foum Zguid, from where we head north to Tazenakht. This town is full of Berber rug and carpet co-operatives, offering a multitude of patterns in their designs.
Turning back east, we reach Ouarzazate by late afternoon, concluding your Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga tour. Your driver will then transfer you to your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable journey.
We suggest you to wear long pants, comfortable closed shoes (like sneakers or boots), and a scarf or hat to protect from the sun.
The typical camel ride lasts between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Erg Chigaga is approximately 250 km (155 miles) from Ouarzazate, which takes around 5-6 hours by 4×4 vehicle due to the off-road sections.
It’s important to respect local customs when taking photos, especially in rural areas. Some people may not feel comfortable being photographed for personal or cultural reasons.
We recommend always asking for permission before taking pictures. Some may agree, while others may say no or ask for a small payment. Respecting their choice is always appreciated.
Most desert camps do not have AC, but luxury camps may offer heating during cold nights (usually via gas or electric heaters).
Most desert camps do not have Wi-Fi, and cell coverage is weak.
Desert camps in Erg Chegaga are equipped with electricity outlets for charging phones, cameras, and other electronic devices, frequently in the form of USBs.
This depends on the camp. Luxury camps usually provide private bathrooms and showers, while standard camps may have shared facilities.
Our 2-day tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga was an unforgettable experience! The journey through stunning landscapes, from ancient kasbahs to vast desert dunes, was breathtaking. The camel ride at sunset and the night in a traditional desert camp under the stars made it even more special.
